Perth International Jazz Festival (PIJF) is seeking expressions of interest to join our Board of Directors. We welcome expressions of interest from individuals with strong governance capability, an interest in our work and a capacity to commit. This is a volunteer opportunity.

Perth International Jazz Festival celebrates jazz in its many forms and contributes to Western Australia’s growing reputation as an arts and culture destination. Embracing innovative programming, artistic excellence and collaborative partnerships, PIJF engages with local, domestic, and international artists to produce high quality jazz experiences in Perth and regional Western Australia.

About the Perth International Jazz Festival Board

Our vision is to be renowned worldwide as a producer and presenter of extraordinary Western Australian jazz experiences.

The Board is currently comprised of eight members who collectively contribute diverse expertise and experience to provide sound governance. This expression of interest will enable the board in managing its succession planning with some board members expecting to complete their positions in 2023.

Skills mix

We have a skill-based board made up of individuals who contribute as volunteer members of the Board. We are looking for expressions of interest from people with skills in one or more of the following areas:

  • Governance
  • Legal
  • Marketing/communications
  • Business development/philanthropy
  • Experience in delivering arts and music programs within regional WA or live in regional WA and have experience in the above
  • Jazz musicians currently active in WA

We encourage First Nations, CaLD and young people to submit expressions of interest.

We are seeking expressions of interest from people whose personal values align with PIJF’s missions and core values, and who are committed to contributing to PIJF through fulfilling the following duties and responsibilities of a Board Member:

  • Attendance at Board meetings throughout the year (circa 10 meetings of around 2 hours in length)
  • Ability to attend Board meetings in person in Perth CBD, or via Teams if regionally based
  • Attendance at the Annual General Meeting in December (run on the same day as a board meeting)
  • Participation in a Board sub-committee including attendance at circa 8 meetings per annum around an hour in length (in person or by Teams)
  • Delivery on individual board member assigned actions
  • Attendance at an annual strategic planning meeting
  • Attendance at various Festival events throughout the year, including VIP/sponsor events
  • Provide strategic guidance and direction to the organisation
  • Ensure organisational compliance with all legal, statutory and regulatory requirements
  • Monitor and evaluate the organisation’s performance and provide constructive feedback to the Chair, General Manager and Artistic Director
  • Act as an ambassador for the organisation, promoting its work and values to the community
Essential Criteria
  • Strong commitment to PIJF’s mission and vision
  • Interest in the arts/jazz music
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strategic thinking and planning abilities
  • Capacity to commit and contribute
Desired Criteria
  • Experience serving on non-profit Boards or equivalent leadership roles on committees
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements of Not-For-Profit organisations
  • Strong understanding of WA arts sector
  • Skills or experience in governance, marketing, philanthropy, or as a practicing jazz musician in WA

Board positions may be subject to satisfactory police check clearance or reference checks. This includes someone who is not disqualified from managing a corporation, within the meaning of the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) and has not been disqualified by the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commissioner at any time during the previous year from being a responsible person of a registered charity.
