Be among the first in Australia to witness the stratospheric rise of alto saxophonist Sarah Hanahan during her first-ever appearance in Perth.
A devotee of bebop, the New York–based musician has made her presence felt in global jazz circles since graduating from the Juilliard School in 2022. Her much-lauded debut album Among Giants was released in June this year and features both jazz standards along with originals including the rhythmically complex “We Bop!”, which she wrote during the pandemic. Of the album, she says, “New voices have pushed and pulled and conceptualised where jazz is today, but through it all, bebop has stayed constant and relevant. This is what we call the lineage and the tradition, and it was my inspiration for the record. I want to pay respect to my mentors and to the greats who have come before me, but I also want to show who I am and the voice I have to contribute to this lineage.” For this performance, Hanahan will be joined by local musicians Harry Mitchell (piano), Karl Florisson (bass) and Ben Vanderwal (drums). Don’t miss this opportunity to see a future jazz legend at the beginning of her career.
